Compression:
One fingerprint occupies 250,000 bytes (characters). With
most individuals having ten fingerprints, the space required
for One Million persons (i.e. ten million prints) is equal
to 2,500,000,000,000 bytes. This calls for compression of
images. We have achieved a compression ratio of up to 20:1
for fingerprint images. After compression the space requirement
would reduce to 125 GB.
Enrollment:
The system enrolls either 10 prints or latent prints, compresses
the images and stores it in the database. It enrolls a print
only if it is not already present in the database.
Enhancement:
The system operates to a preset fingerprint quality. If
the number of minutiae points falls below a certain number,
the system automatically enhances the in put poor quality
fingerprint image.
Matching:
On receiving a latent print (for instance, the print taken
at the crime scene) the system compares that with the prints
stored in the database and displays the prints that match
the most.
Classification of data:
It is done based on the different parameters such as the
attributes of the fingerprint (i.e. Whorl, Arch, loop etc),
sex of the criminal, modus operandi of crime and so on.
Typical Applications:
Criminal investigations,
Money service - cash cards- transaction,
Access control to wide public sites,
Automotive (theft protection device),
Computer system
access and settings,
Identify - social services - judicial, Cryptography.
